Landslides and rain: paths damaged: "The main refuge is also closed"

Jun 7, 2025

The CAI appeal to "adopt a path", after the many damages caused by bad weather and landslides. In addition, the refuge is still closed
There is a real need: recently the Cai - Italian Alpine Club section of Florence relaunched the " Adopt a path " project, asking for help from its members and even non-members for better management of the Mugello hiking trails. The situation in Mugello is not among the best. Of course, it is not easy to take care of the tracks and paths that branch out into the woods and mountains of the Mugello Apennines. Because there are so many: in fact, there are 640 km of paths under the jurisdiction of the Mountain Union of the Municipalities of Mugello. And the main branches have been looked after for years by volunteers from the Cai of Florence, which recently opened a section in Mugello with headquarters in Borgo San Lorenzo.
The various episodes of bad weather , with landslides, mudslides, and a real massacre of trees and plants have also deeply wounded the network of paths, with fallen trunks that make walking difficult or sometimes impossible. Among the recent wounds, we must also remember the landslide that brought tons of garbage into the heart of the Rovigo valley, ending up in the stream. The bad news is not over. This year the main refuge, open every weekend, and every day during the summer months, the Diacci refuge, which offered numerous initiatives, in addition to the bar, restaurant and overnight stay, is closed. The old management has ceased, the activity has been suspended due to important building works, the competition to find the new manager, called by the Union of Municipalities has not yet concluded.
Here then is the invitation to " adopt a path " by the CAI, addressed to everyone, hiking enthusiasts, associations, but also to residents or entrepreneurs interested in a correct use of the hiking network, so that they can provide an "operational" contribution.
